Weather & AQI

Plan your visit with China's weather patterns and air quality information.

China spans five climate zones with dramatically different weather across regions. This guide covers seasonal weather patterns, Air Quality Index (AQI) interpretation, clothing recommendations and useful weather apps. The best travel times are April-May and September-November. Northern winters can drop to -20 degrees Celsius while southern summers reach 40 degrees. Always check AQI before outdoor activities and wear N95/KN95 masks on high pollution days.

Features

Spring (March-May)

Northern China: 5-20°C, still cold early spring. Southern China: 15-25°C, rainy season begins. Best for: Beijing, Xi'an, Hangzhou

Summer (June-August)

Hot everywhere (30-40°C), monsoon rains, typhoons in south. "Four Furnaces": Wuhan, Chongqing, Nanjing, Nanchang. Best for: Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang

Autumn (September-November)

Best travel season! 15-25°C most areas. Clear skies, beautiful foliage. Great for: all major cities

Winter (December-February)

North: -20°C to 0°C (Harbin ice festival!). South: 5-15°C (Hainan tropical). Central heating north of Yangtze River only

Understanding AQI

0-50 Good, 51-100 Moderate, 101-150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, 151-200 Unhealthy, 201-300 Very Unhealthy, 300+ Hazardous. PM2.5 is the main concern

Protecting Yourself from Pollution

N95/KN95 masks effective. Check AQI before outdoor activities. Air purifier in hotel room. Avoid exercising outdoors on bad days. Worst months: December-February in northern cities
